It was built as a symbol of Christianity and to welcome visitors to Brazil. The statue faces the city with arms open wide. You can see Copacabana Beach, Sugarloaf Mountain, and the whole bay from up there.
The soapstone tiles on the outside help it handle rain and wind. There’s a chapel inside the pedestal too.
To visit: You take a train or van up through Tijuca Forest to Corcovado. Mornings are clearer and less crowded. Evenings are great for sunset views over the city.
