The Milky Way 🌌
The Milky Way 🌌
Our home galaxy
Quick Facts
- What it is: A barred spiral galaxy with 100-400 billion stars
- Shape: Like a giant pinwheel with 4 main spiral arms. From the side it looks like a thin disk with a bulge in the middle
- Size: About 100,000 light-years across
- Age: ∼13.6 billion years old
- Where we are: On the Orion Arm, about 26,000 light-years from the center
- Center: Has a supermassive black hole called _Sagittarius A\_
- Neighbors: Closest big galaxy is Andromeda. We’ll collide with it in ∼4.5 billion years
Can you see it from Karachi?
Yes, but you need dark skies away from city I: The Milky Way 🌌

Yes, but you need dark skies away from city lights.
Best time: Summer months, June–August, late night. Look south. You’ll see a faint cloudy band across the sky — that’s the dense star clouds and dust of the Milky Way’s disk.
Light pollution in Karachi makes it tough. For the clearest view, head out to the desert or coastal areas with no city glow.
Cool stuff about it
1. The name: "Milky Way" comes from its milky white band across the night sky
2. It’s moving: The whole galaxy is spinning at ∼828,000 km/h
3. You’re on it: Every star you see at night, including our Sun, is inside the Milky Way
4. Dark matter: Most of its mass is invisible dark matter holding it together
