*Why it’s called the lungs of the Earth:*
- Produces about 20% of the world’s oxygen
- Stores huge amounts of carbon and helps regulate global weather
*Wildlife in the Amazon:*
It has the most biodiversity of any place on the planet.
- Animals: jaguars, sloths, pink river dolphins, capybaras, anacondas, poison dart frogs, monkeys like howler and spider monkeys
- Birds: toucans, macaws, harpy eagles
- Insects: millions of species, including bullet ants
- About 1 in 10 known species on Earth lives here
*Plants and people:*
- Over 40,000 plant species. Many are used for medicine
- Home to more than 300 indigenous tribes. Some have never had contact with the outside world
*Threats:*
Deforestation, fires, mining, and climate change are shrinking it fast. Scientists say if we lose too much, it could flip from absorbing CO2 to releasing it.
It’s basically a whole other world in there. Everything from the canopy 60m up to the river floor is packed with life.
