K2 2nd highest mountain in the world

K2

It is the 2nd highest mountain in the world after Everest.

Quick facts:
Height: 8,611 meters, about 28,251 ft
Location: Karakoram range, on the border of Pakistan and China. The Pakistani side is in Gilgit-Baltistan.
Nicknames: The Savage Mountain and The Mountaineer's Mountain
First climbed: 1954 by an Italian team

Why it is famous:
It is steeper and has worse weather than Everest. The climbing window is only about June to August.
It has a much higher fatality rate. Roughly 1 in 4 people who reach the summit have died on the mountain.
Famous dangerous spots are the Bottleneck and the House Chimney.
Most climbs are done without extra oxygen.
It was the last 8000 meter peak to be climbed in winter, which happened in 2021 by a Nepalese team.

To get there from Pakistan you usually trek for about 2 weeks from Skardu to reach base camp at Concordia. The view of K2 is a huge pyramid of rock and ice.

People climb Everest for the height. People climb K2 for the challenge.
