The Pyramids of Giza Egypt Surface

 The Pyramids of Giza

They are in Giza, Egypt, just outside modern Cairo. It's one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, and the only one still standing.

The 3 main pyramids

There are 3 big ones built for pharaohs of the 4th Dynasty, around 2580 to 2560 BC.

1. Great Pyramid of Khufu

Built for Pharaoh Khufu. It was the tallest man-made structure for almost 4000 years at 146.6 meters. Originally it was covered in smooth white limestone that shone in the sun. Inside is the King's Chamber with a granite sarcophagus.

2. Pyramid of Khafre

Built for Khufu's son Khafre. It looks a bit taller because it sits on higher ground, but it's actually slightly smaller. The Great Sphinx sits in front of this pyramid complex.

3. Pyramid of Menkaure

The smallest of the 3, built for Menkaure. It used granite on the lower part.

There are also 3 smaller "queen's pyramids" next to each main one, plus temples and causeways.

How were they built

We still debate the exact methods. What we know:

- Around 2.3 million stone blocks were used for the Great Pyramid. Each block averages 2.5 tons.

- Workers were skilled laborers, not slaves, living in a nearby city. They used ramps, levers, and the Nile for transport.

- It took about 20 years to build the Great Pyramid with thousands of workers.

Cool facts

- The sides of the Great Pyramid are aligned almost perfectly to the cardinal directions north, south, east, west.

- The original casing stones reflected sunlight so brightly that ancient writers said it looked like a jewel.

- The Sphinx next to Khafre's pyramid is 73 meters long and is carved from one limestone ridge.

- Inside the pyramids there are narrow shafts, hidden chambers, and passages that are still being studied today.

Today

You can visit them in Giza. They are about 20 minutes from downtown Cairo. At night there’s a light and sound show. Tourism helps fund preservation, but erosion and pollution are ongoing challenges.
