The Bermuda Triangle

 The Bermuda Triangle

It's an area in the western part of the North Atlantic Ocean, roughly between Miami, Bermuda, and San Juan, Puerto Rico. Because of that triangle shape people started calling it the Bermuda Triangle.

What it's known for

The main idea is that a lot of ships and planes have disappeared there without a trace. The stories really took off after 1945 when 5 US Navy bombers called Flight 19 vanished during a training flight. The rescue plane sent to find them also disappeared.

Other famous cases people mention:

- The 1918 disappearance of the USS Cyclops, a huge navy cargo ship with 300+ people

- Several small planes and boats that went missing in the 50s and 60s

Why people think it's strange

Over the years books and TV shows made it sound mysterious. Ideas people threw around include:

- Rogue waves that can be 30 meters high

- Sudden storms and hurricanes that form quickly

- Methane gas bubbles from the sea floor that could sink ships

- Compass problems because magnetic north and true north are close together there

- Human error and heavy traffic. It's one of the busiest shipping and flight routes in the world

What scientists and the Coast Guard say

The US Coast Guard and insurance companies don't consider it more dangerous than any other busy part of the ocean. Most disappearances have explanations:

- Bad weather in the Atlantic is common

- The Gulf Stream is a fast current that can scatter wreckage very quickly

- A lot of planes and ships cross that area every day, so statistically more incidents happen there

There is no evidence that the disappearance rate is higher than in other oceans.

Fun fact

The name "Bermuda Triangle" was first used in a magazine article in 1964. Before that it was just called "the Devil's Triangle" by some writers.

So basically it's a real place with real weather and real traffic, but the "mystery" part is mostly stories built up over decades.
