Republicans scorn ‘absurd,’ ‘non- starter’ Schumer ploy to end shutdown after 38 days
Short News: GOP Rejects Schumer’s Offer to End 38-Day Shutdown
Congressional Republicans rejected Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer’s “compromise” to end the 38-day government shutdown — now the longest in US history.
On Friday, Schumer proposed a “clean, one-year extension” of ACA subsidies through Dec. 31, 2026, attached to a stopgap funding bill to reopen the government through Sept. 30, 2026. He also called for a bipartisan committee to negotiate longer-term health care reforms.
GOP leaders quickly shot it down.
- Senate Majority Leader John Thune called it “unserious.”
- House Republicans labeled it a “nonstarter,” accusing Democrats of “holding the entire USA hostage” to protect Obamacare subsidies.
Trump posted that Republicans should either “reach a Deal” or “terminate the Filibuster.” The White House said Trump will only discuss policy after Democrats vote to reopen the government.
The shutdown began Oct. 1 after Senate Democrats blocked a GOP funding bill 14 times. A separate GOP bill to pay federal workers who missed paychecks also failed 53-43 on Friday.
Lawmakers remain deadlocked over funding and health care as federal workers, troops, and SNAP recipients feel the impact.
