Supreme Court allows Trump admin to temporarily withhold full SNAP benefits amid government shutdown in emergency order

Short News: Supreme Court Pauses Full SNAP Payments During Shutdown

The Supreme Court on Friday allowed the Trump administration to temporarily withhold about $4 billion in SNAP food aid for 42 million low-income Americans.

Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson issued an administrative stay, blocking a lower-court order that required full November SNAP payments. The stay lasts until 2 days after the 1st Circuit Court rules on the administration’s appeal.

A Rhode Island judge had ordered the government to use all available funds — including $23.35B from a child-nutrition account — to pay the full $8.5-$9B for November benefits, accusing the administration of withholding aid for “political reasons.”

The Justice Dept. warned the order would cause “shutdown chaos.” The administration says it has allocated $4.65B in emergency funds but not the full amount.

Despite the fight, NY, NJ, MA, WI, OR, HI, and PA paid full benefits Friday. Others plan to pay over the weekend.

SNAP benefits lapsed for the first time in 60 years, leaving roughly 1 in 8 Americans unsure when they’ll get food aid.
